The SAT & ACT

Fall

Seniors who did not take the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT with writing last spring should consider signing up for the October administration of the test. You should also check with the colleges you are considering applying to in order to determine if you need to take SAT Subject Tests.

To help you meet admission application deadlines, we strongly recommend that you do not delay taking these tests. November and December test dates should be reserved for retaking a test you hope to improve your score on, or to take SAT Subject Tests for colleges that come up late in your search process.

College bound juniors are strongly encouraged to take the PSAT in mid-October. When we receive the results, the guidance staff will meet with you to review your score reports. We recommend that you then prepare to take the SAT or ACT with writing in the spring (April, May or June). How you go about preparing can vary from student to student, but we strongly encourage all Sturgis students to consider signing up for the SAT question of the day, and/or the ACT question of the day.

Please refer to the College Board (SAT) and ACT web sites for up-to-date information about test dates and registration deadlines. Spring

Juniors, now that you have begun to research college possibilities, it’s time to take either the SAT or the ACT with writing. If you sign up for the ACT, you are strongly encouraged to include the optional writing component. Depending on the admissions requirements of the colleges you are interested in, you might also want to sign up for several SAT Subject Tests.

Most colleges require either SAT or ACT results. Both are universally accepted, so the choice of test is up to you. There are important differences between the tests, so do some research and select the format that best suits you. What are the differences between the SAT and the ACT? You can visit both the College Board (SAT) and the ACT sites to learn more about and take sample tests.

Fee Waivers

The College Board and the ACT provide fee waivers for students with demonstrated financial need. Students whose families meet certain financial guidelines are also eligible for a limited number of college application fee waivers. If the cost of college admissions testing and application fees will be an obstacle, please contact your guidance counselor in order to explore eligibility for these waivers.
