The Common Application requires and many individual school applications also request a School Report or Counselor Recommendation. In an effort to best support our students, the Guidance Team at Sturgis uses feedback from a number of individuals – parents, students and teachers - to assist us in providing colleges and universities with some insight into the “person behind the transcript.”
A Parent Brag Sheet, Student Self-Description and Teacher Evaluations are solicited in the spring of each student’s junior year, and our quest for this feedback continues into the fall of senior year. To avoid hastily written recommendations, the Guidance Team strongly recommends that these forms be returned to us in a timely fashion.
As with all requests for letters of recommendation, students are asked to notify their respective guidance counselor three to four weeks in advance of their first application deadline. The transcript request form which triggers the preparation and sending of school documents can be used for this purpose. Students are also strongly encouraged to waive their right to view letters of recommendation. College and university admissions personnel feel such letters are more open and candid and, as a result, tend to give them more weight in the admissions process.
